<image:title>About Me</image:title>
<image:caption>ABOUT ME My Educational and Professional Background My name is Nicole Brown, and I have had the honor of serving as Mayor of the City of Ypsilanti since 2022 after previously serving eight years on City Council, including as Mayor Pro Tem. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Communication & Social Work and my Master of Social Work from Eastern Michigan University. Alongside my public service, I serve as the Director of a behavioral health organization, where I lead behavioral health programs that support children, youth, and families. My career has always centered on helping people navigate challenges, building strong teams, and creating systems that work better for the communities they serve. That work has reinforced what I have always believed: the best policy is created with the people it impacts. Whether I’m working with residents, community partners, state agencies, or local organizations, I believe lasting change comes from listening first, building relationships, and bringing people together to solve problems. My Service Serving this community has always been about more than holding office. It has meant showing up consistently, listening to residents, volunteering, mentoring young people, and helping build a city where everyone feels like they belong. I continue to stay involved through community cleanups, neighborhood events, youth engagement, and partnerships with local organizations. I am a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter. I was honored to receive the Eastern Michigan University Distinguished Young Alumni Award and remain actively involved with the university through service and mentorship, including the EMU Alumni Association Board of Directors. Supporting students and helping develop the next generation of leaders continues to be one of the most rewarding parts of my work. Serving as Your Mayor Since taking office as Mayor in 2022, my focus has been on making local government more responsive, collaborative, and accessible while delivering real results for residents. Together, we’ve secured millions of dollars in state and federal investments for infrastructure improvements, parks, public safety, housing, and neighborhood development. We’ve supported hundreds of new housing units across the city, expanded investments in affordable housing, strengthened partnerships to address homelessness, and continued advocating for housing that serves residents at every income level. We’ve worked to improve public safety by expanding violence prevention efforts, supporting first responders, investing in community partnerships, and creating opportunities for residents to have a stronger voice in public safety conversations. I have prioritized transparency and community engagement by increasing communication with residents, creating more opportunities for public input, and ensuring that difficult conversations happen in the open. I have also worked to strengthen relationships with regional, county, state, and tribal partners because many of the challenges facing Ypsilanti require collaboration beyond our city limits. As Mayor, I have had the privilege of representing Ypsilanti across Michigan and nationally while serving as Secretary of the Black Mayors of Michigan and continuing to advocate for resources that benefit our community. Looking Ahead While I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together, there is still important work ahead. I remain committed to improving our infrastructure, expanding housing opportunities, supporting local businesses, investing in neighborhood safety, strengthening our parks and public spaces, and ensuring every resident feels connected to City Hall. I believe the strongest communities are built through partnership. When we listen to one another, stay engaged, and are willing to tackle difficult challenges together, we create lasting change. It has been the honor of my life to serve this community, and I look forward to continuing that work alongside the people of Ypsilanti. Highlights of Accomplishments First Black woman elected Mayor of Ypsilanti Secured millions in state and federal funding for infrastructure, housing, parks, and public safety Supported development of more than 350 new housing units and expanded affordable housing efforts Advanced investments in neighborhood infrastructure, streets, sidewalks, and public spaces Strengthened regional partnerships to address homelessness and housing insecurity Expanded violence prevention and community safety initiatives Increased transparency and community engagement through more accessible local government Continued support for youth programming and community grants Strengthened relationships with state, county, nonprofit, business, and tribal partners Served as Secretary of the Black Mayors of Michigan Created the Black Lives Matter Task Force Established the Police Advisory Commission Expanded access to Barrier Busters Formed an expungement partnership with the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office Expanded re-entry housing support Increased investments in parks, neighborhood improvements, and quality-of-life projects “If you are willing to get closer to people who are suffering, you will find the power to change the world.” – Bryan Stevenson, Equal Justice Initiative</image:caption>
